2011 The 10K Multi Terrain Challenge

On Easter Sunday 24th April 2011, 259 runners set off on the second Helmsley 10k run. It was a gloriously sunny day which seemed to give an extra boost to the winners who shaved over 90 seconds off last year's course records. Tom Bean finished in 34 min 32 sec and Becky Penty, last year's women's winner, finished in 37 min 10 sec. Both Tom and Becky are members of the York Acorn Running Club.

This year the race was very generously sponsored by The Helmsley Black Swan Hotel. General Manager Andrew Jamieson presented the prizes to the winning runners and, as a special prize the first male and first female runner back also won a night's dinner, bed and breakfast at the Helmsley Black Swan. All runners received a mug and an Easter Egg which they all richly deserved.

We had lots of positive comments about the race and we were very pleased to see so many of the previous year's entrants running again. They had obviously forgotten about the long climb up to Carlton Village at the start of the race! We were very grateful to everyone who came and helped at the event including all the marshals. There were representatives from several of the sports clubs from Helmsley, in particular the Bowling Club, members of the Ryedale Lions and also residents of Helmsley themselves. All proceeds from the race and fundraising events have been handed over to the Helmsley Charity fund that is coordinating fundraising for the regeneration of the sports facilities in Baxton's Lane.

We look forward o seeing everyone on Easter Sunday, April 8th 2012 for the 3rd Helmsley 10k run.

2010 Helmsley 10K Multi Terrain Challenge

Easter Sunday the 4th of April 2010 saw the inaugural running of the Helmsley 10K Multi Terrain Challenge. Run over a challenging course from the Sports and Recreation Ground in Helmsley through the village of Carlton and back into Helmsley via Riccal Dale almost 300 runners entered for the race.

The Committee who organised the event headed by Carol Swift had a steep learning curve to ensure all went well on the day but the number of positive comments from the runners has already guaranteed the event will take place next year, again on Easter Sunday the 24 April 2011.

Andy Hilton from York who finished in 36.06 minutes was the first runner home and the overall winner but everyone who entered, ran and finished was a real winner on the day. You can see the results here.

Prizes were awarded in the open and veteran categories for both sexes and sports shop vouchers to the value of over £500.00 were given out to the winners after the event by Jake Duncombe from the Duncombe Park Estate over whose land part of the race was run. Those who finished the run received a mug which confirmed their status as a runner on the day and and as a topical touch an Easter Egg!

The success of this event highlights the new found spirit of the Recreation Ground with nearly all the marshals for the run coming from the Sports Clubs who use the facility on Baxtons Lane.
