Report on the 2013 10K Multi Terrain Challenge
Race Day dawned clear and dry for the 4th Helmsley 10k Multi Terrain Challenge. Although it was very cold at least the biting winds had died away and the sun came out as the runners set off. With 367 runners finishing this was our busiest year yet with entrants from as far away as New Zealand! We were delighted to see so many returning runners as well as many tackling the course for the first time.
We would also like to thank Mrs Vicky Gibson and Middlesbrough Football Club for their support this year.
The off road parts of the course were firm thanks to the freezing weather apart from one gateway from the downhill field which slowed people down a little. Well done to course winner Shaun O'Grady of New Marske Harriers whose time of 33min 57 sec was only slightly more than the course record of 33min 48 sec. Our fastest lady runner with a time of 39min 03 sec, was Emma Yates of York Knavesmire Running Club.
Results for the race can be seen at Sports Soft Race Results:
For the first time we also held a race for secondary aged children aged 11 - 14 years with the youngsters running part of the adult course before turning back through the woods and down to the sports field. The children's races were even more popular this year with nearly 90 children taking part. Many thanks to John Higgs, deputising for Phil Marwood, and the junior sports leaders from Ryedale School for organising these races so well.
As always huge thanks go to everyone who so generously gave up their time to help us - members of the Helmsley Sports Clubs in particular, residents of Helmsley and surrounding areas, The Ryedale Rotary Club and the Ryedale Lions. We could not run the event without the help that we receive. The refreshments served by Ann Russell and her team from the Bowls Club were as popular and delicious as ever, raising a huge amount for the Sports and Social Club regeneration fund. Jane Barker ran a tombola for the first time on race day which proved popular. All proceeds from the run go to the regeneration fund.
We are already thinking about next year's race on Easter Sunday, 20th April 2014. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

The Helmsley 10k challenge is a multi terrain race partly on road, partly on forestry track and footpaths and fields. (see map) The total distance this year will be 10km. we will be moving the start line so that the race is 10km; the finish line will be on the Sports Field as usual. The minimum age for entries is 15 on 31st March 2013. The nature of this course makes it unsuitable for wheelchair athletes.
This year we are delighted to announce that we are being sponsored by Middlesbrough Football Club. All proceeds from the race and associated fundraising events goes to the Helmsley Recreation Charity fund that is coordinating fundraising for the regeneration of the sports facilities in Baxton's Lane. Work is well in progress on this so all the hard work is paying off.
Children's Races. Following the success of last year there will be children's races on the sports field for children aged 5 - 14 starting at about 11am. There will be 4 races, one each for school year groups 1 - 2, 3 - 4, 5 - 6 and for children aged 11 - 14 who are in secondary school. Entry will be on the day only and will cost £3. On Easter Sunday, 8th April, 306 runners set off on the third Helmsley 10k multi terrain challenge. The weather was cooler and more overcast than last year but this did not deter the runners with our overall winner, Tom Bean of City of York AC, finishing in 33 minutes 48 seconds beating his own record from last year. Check out photographs from this year's race on The Race Photographer's site.
We had a record number of entrants this year and we were delighted to see so many new entrants as well as those who have raced before. We were also very pleased to be able to have some fun runs for primary school aged children and our thanks go to Phil Marwood of Ryedale School and his team of Junior Sports Leaders for organising those races. Over 50 youngsters from 3 year old toddlers to 11 year olds took part. There are some future running stars in there!
Once again we had lots of positive comments about the race and we are very grateful to everyone who came and helped at the event including all the marshals. There were representatives from several of the sports clubs from Helmsley, in particular the Bowling Club, members of the Ryedale Lions and also residents of Helmsley themselves.
Our thanks also to our sponsor James Calvert of Calverts Carpets. All proceeds from the race and fundraising events will be handed over to the Helmsley Charity fund that is coordinating fundraising for the regeneration of the sports facilities in Baxton's Lane. Work has already started on this so all the hard work is paying off.
We look forward to seeing everyone on Easter Sunday, March 31st for the 4th Helmsley 10k run. Keep checking for further details on how to enter later in the year!

2011 The 10K Multi Terrain Challenge
On Easter Sunday 24th April 2011, 259 runners set off on the second Helmsley 10k run. It was a gloriously sunny day which seemed to give an extra boost to the winners who shaved over 90 seconds off last year's course records. Tom Bean finished in 34 min 32 sec and Becky Penty, last year's women's winner, finished in 37 min 10 sec. Both Tom and Becky are members of the York Acorn Running Club.
This year the race was very generously sponsored by The Helmsley Black Swan Hotel. General Manager Andrew Jamieson presented the prizes to the winning runners and, as a special prize the first male and first female runner back also won a night's dinner, bed and breakfast at the Helmsley Black Swan. All runners received a mug and an Easter Egg which they all richly deserved.
We had lots of positive comments about the race and we were very pleased to see so many of the previous year's entrants running again. They had obviously forgotten about the long climb up to Carlton Village at the start of the race! We were very grateful to everyone who came and helped at the event including all the marshals. There were representatives from several of the sports clubs from Helmsley, in particular the Bowling Club, members of the Ryedale Lions and also residents of Helmsley themselves. All proceeds from the race and fundraising events have been handed over to the Helmsley Charity fund that is coordinating fundraising for the regeneration of the sports facilities in Baxton's Lane.
We look forward o seeing everyone on Easter Sunday, April 8th 2012 for the 3rd Helmsley 10k run.

2010 Helmsley 10K Multi Terrain Challenge
Easter Sunday the 4th of April 2010 saw the inaugural running of the Helmsley 10K Multi Terrain Challenge. Run over a challenging course from the Sports and Recreation Ground in Helmsley through the village of Carlton and back into Helmsley via Riccal Dale almost 300 runners entered for the race.
The Committee who organised the event headed by Carol Swift had a steep learning curve to ensure all went well on the day but the number of positive comments from the runners has already guaranteed the event will take place next year, again on Easter Sunday the 24 April 2011.
Andy Hilton from York who finished in 36.06 minutes was the first runner home and the overall winner but everyone who entered, ran and finished was a real winner on the day. You can see the results here.
Prizes were awarded in the open and veteran categories for both sexes and sports shop vouchers to the value of over £500.00 were given out to the winners after the event by Jake Duncombe from the Duncombe Park Estate over whose land part of the race was run. Those who finished the run received a mug which confirmed their status as a runner on the day and and as a topical touch an Easter Egg!
The success of this event highlights the new found spirit of the Recreation Ground with nearly all the marshals for the run coming from the Sports Clubs who use the facility on Baxtons Lane.
The picture below shows the Winners from the 2010 Race. Well done all!
